Executive Director of Historical Programs and Properties


The Executive Director is the chief administrator for the Oxford Museum Association

with a mission to promote awareness and appreciation of area history through

education, public programs and preservation of historic sites.

The Oxford Museum Association is a non-profit organization committed to the

preservation and demonstration of nineteenth century rural and small-town life in the

Greater Oxford (Ohio) Community and the Talawanda School District. 

The Executive Director plays an integral role in coordinating and directing activities at

the historic sites entrusted to the Association. Activities include grant application

preparation, networking with the membership, community and related organizations,

promoting educational programs, maintaining grounds of the properties, identification of

preservation issues and remediation plans for the historic properties, acquisition and

preservation of historical artifacts, supervising summer interns.

Duties for this part-time position includes working with the Board of Trustees and

committees to provide leadership for communications, publicity, financial administration,

fundraising and donor stewardship.

Position Qualifications Include:

● Bachelors degree or higher educational achievement with a preference for public

history or museum studies

● Experience in museums, history, or non-profits.

● Strong skills in leadership and team building, oral and written communications.

● Excellent organizational skills, detail oriented, and the ability to multitask and

keep concurrent projects on track to meet deadlines.


Duties For This Part-Time Position Include:


Community Engagement

● Clearly and concisely present information and respond to questions from a

variety of constituents. An enthusiasm for sharing knowledge with a variety of

audiences.

● Educate docents and volunteers with regards to the collection areas and

exhibitions as assigned.

● Partner with other museum curators and key staff.

● Ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively with internal and

external stakeholders.


Scholarship

● Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills and strong

research abilities in libraries, archives and online. Requires the ability to read,

analyze and interpret documents and write gallery texts, business

correspondence, lectures and articles.

● Respond to outside queries from scholars and the public. Meet with visiting

scholars and assist them with the use of the museum’s collections and

resources.

● Write for publications and for the general public.

● Write and present lectures and public gallery talks.

● Play a significant role in publications management, including newsletter

preparation, rights and reproductions, proofreading and liaising with authors,

photographers, and publishers.


Board Relations

● Attend board meetings, exhibition planning, and other meetings, as assigned.

Attend special events as requested, some after conventional museum hours.

● Working with the Board of Trustees and committees to provide leadership for

communications, publicity, financial administration, fundraising and donor

stewardship.


Collections and Exhibitions

● Assist in the development, planning and installation of temporary exhibitions and

the museum’s permanent collection.

● Assist with the acquisition of objects for the collection, including research, writing

and cataloging duties with the collections management database.

● Must be proficient with computers, including the Microsoft Office Suite, have

experience with or have the facility to master the museum’s collections

management software, PastPerfect 5, to make exhibition checklists, catalogue

objects and perform other tasks.

● Research and document objects in the collection and related topics and stay

current with on-line resources.


Development

● Fundraising and fiscal management.

● Grant writing and reporting.


Preservation

● Identifying preservation issues with the historic properties and grounds.

● Creating remediation and repair plans for preservation issues.

● Environmental monitoring and control of the historic buildings for the preservation

of collections.


● Other special projects and departmental duties as assigned.
